Why This Division of MSO Was Founded:
On 1/17/17, I experienced a life-altering event that deeply impacted my perspective and fueled my passion for providing accurate and comprehensive urine drug screens for addiction treatment facilities. That day, I overdosed and faced death while in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in San Juan Capistrano, CA.
The circumstances surrounding my overdose were eye-opening. As a resident in one of the facilities sober livings, I had discovered that one of my roommates was using drugs and using deceptive methods, a wizinator, to pass drug tests. Regrettably, I remained silent, holding onto the addict mindset of secrecy rather than realizing the immense danger it posed to everyone residing there. Tragically, the situation escalated when my roommate offered me drugs.
As someone who was struggling with addiction and had been clean for just a few months, I unfortunately made a regrettable choice. Unaware of its contents, I unknowingly consumed a substance that was mixed with a highly potent substance. Tragically, this would prove to be a fatal mistake with dire consequences.
I want to emphasize that my intention in sharing this personal journey is not to place blame but to shed light on the critical importance of stringent urine analysis procedures in addiction treatment facilities.
Following my overdose, paramedics found me blue and unresponsive after almost ten hours, and, miraculously, they managed to resuscitate me and rush me to the hospital. Given only a 5% chance of survival, I defied the odds and woke up from a coma with severe injuries. The prolonged time of being hunched over on the toilet caused a life-threatening condition called compartment syndrome, leading to significant swelling and circulation issues in my right leg. The path to recovery was arduous, requiring years of rehabilitation to learn how to walk again and heal both physically and emotionally.
Reflecting on this life-altering experience, I saw the gaps in urine analysis procedures within treatment facilities. The lax supervision, the absence of measures to detect fake urine or devices like the wizinator, and the lack of awareness around identifying potential signs of drug use were glaring issues that needed improvement.
Driven by my own personal journey and a newfound sense of purpose, I co-founded the addiction recovery division of MSO with a clear mission: to ensure addiction treatment facilities have the accurate, reliable, and comprehensive urine drug screening they need to keep their patients and staff safe. No facility or individual should have to go through the devastating trauma and consequences caused by ineffective drug testing procedures.
